“This book grew out of a semester course for beginning graduate students of mathematics, physics, engineering, and meteorology. Some of them had, and others had not, taken an undergraduate course in fluid dynamics. It became clear that they had a common interest in a certain core of knowledge on the subject, and that a good understanding of it would provide a very suitable basis for their diverse, specialized graduate courses on fluid mechanics and would raise their level of understanding in those courses quite drastically. This core of knowledge concerns the relation between inviscid and viscous fluids, and the bulk of this book is devoted to a discussion of that relation. The book is strictly an introduction, aiming to open the “specialized literature for the reader, not to replace it. At the same time, an attempt is made to give the introduction at a level of sophistication appropriate to the subject, and to graduate students.”
